High School Musical on Ice: It's so Cool, It's Hot!
Not resting on its laurels with the success of two High School Musical movies, Walt Disney executive have found a new gold mine with High School Musical on Ice. It is on tour all around US and UK but tickets are still getting hard to come by. Check out the internet and you would see High School Musical on Ice websites announcing “sold-out” on tickets.
So great is the response of fans that several bookings for High School Musical on Ice have to accommodate several box office requests for additional shows. This exciting extravaganza on ice greatly captures the magic of the two movies that expected technical difficulties associated with transforming choreography into ice skating figures proved to be more of a boon than bane.
We could not help but admire the marketing savvy of Walt Disney executives that way before coming up with High School Musical 2 (movie) they came up with this idea. Now that High School Musical 2 proved to duplicate its predecessor’s success, plus High School Musical on Ice, High School Musical 3 wouldn’t even be necessary if we talk about reaping millions of dollars in revenues. Besides, there might be some casting problems as Zac and Vanessa would be older may be awkward to be “high schools” by the time they start filming High School Musical 3.
High School Musical on Ice would be a good venue to freeze their age on ice, pardon the pun. With this show, fans can endlessly appreciate the songs, the feel, and the good messages, wholesome typical Disney characters, and the fond memories of both movies. What’s more, the choreography is made more exciting, while different in a good way, by professional and championship level skaters who are playing the roles of Troy, Gabriella, Sharpay, Chad, and Ryan, among others.
An interview with Charles “Chucky” Klapow, High School Musical on Ice’s choreographer gives us some insight on some behind the scenes highlights:
- The choreogrpaher’s favorite choreographed part of the story was the baseball number where Chad and Ryan had a face-off. Setting this baseball scene on ice was both fun and challenging.
- The most difficult song to choreograph for the High School Musical on Ice version was also the baseball number. They had to tweak some parts of it for the skating version.
- Choreographing High School Musical on Ice is an entirely different matter compared to doing the movie versions. On screen, the actors face only one direction. On ice, the audience are surrounding the cast (skaters) from three sides. You know how it is with shows—you don’t ignore some audience by keeping your back to them. The choreography on ice is done in such a way that audience crowds from all three sides are alternately being faced by the cast.
So, why do you think High School Musical movies and the ice tour are such big hits? Some would say the positive messages that the youth could easily relate to, are good reasons for their success.
Remember these phrases:
- “We’re all in this together”
- “You can do whatever you want to do”
- “Accept your friends for who they are”
