High School Musical Movie Storyline
High School Musical Live the Movie is a Disney Channel Original Movie that became a worldwide hit when it was released in 2006. The movie is about two teenage kids who find love and pursue new passions despite the pressure to conform and “stick” to the status quo.
The movie begins with Troy Bolton (played by Zac Efron) practicing shooting some hoops with his dad at the gym at a ski lodge. His mother convinces him to join the other teens at the New Year’s Eve Party. There he meets Gabriela Montez (Vanessa Anne Hudgens). They were forced to sing together at the karaoke stage and after they sing they exchange numbers.
After the winter break Troy goes back to East High where he is the captain of the basketball team. He hangs pretty much with his basketball buddies. At school he is popular with the girls and is expected to lead his basketball team to victory at the championships.
Gabriela Montez finds herself walking the halls of East High for the first time. Her mom was transferred because of her job and not Gabriela has to go the same school as Troy. They are thrilled to see each other again but Troy drops the hint that Gabriela can’t tell anyone how he sang at the ski resort. He has a reputation to protect and they deal with the fragile social order of high school.
Somehow Troy and Gabriela act out their desire to audition for the school play buy they do it in hiding. They’re first audition was actually more of an accident. After the rest of the teens auditioning for the play have left the auditorium, Troy and Gabriela help Kelsi, the writer of the school play pick up her notes from the floor. Kelsi shows them how she intended for her song to sound after brother and sister tandem Ryan and Sharpay Evans turn it into an upbeat pop song. Troy and Gabriela sing while Kelsi played the song on the piano. They do so well that they get called back for the second auditions for the lead role in the school’s winter musical Twinkle Town. As soon as the results of the auditions are posted on the school board, the other kids in school get uncomfortable with the thought of the school jock and the new girl at school auditioning for the play. Most affected is Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) who has always starred in all of the school’s productions. She can’t believe the school jocks and the nerds are auditioning for the school’s musical.
Sharpay urges Troy’s friend Chad and Gabriela’s friend Taylor to try to keep the couple out of the school play. But still Troy and Gabriela want to pursue this new interest and despite their early protestations, the couple’s friends lend their support. In the end the couple manage to audition for the play and convince Ms. Darbus, the drama teacher that they are the right people to play the leads for the play. The movie ends with the whole East High class singing at the school gym. It’s a happy ending for everyone.
High School Musical Live is a popular movie that teaches kids to pursue their interests even if the social “group” they are part of does not think it is appropriate for them to do so.
